Albert Bierstadt

ALBERT BIERSTADT

Albert Bierstadt was an American-German painter from Solingen. His paintings belong to the artistic movement of Romanticism. Bierstadt was enthralled by the landscapes of Western America, so he became the first artist to tour these sceneries and paint them. He was a member of both the Hudson River School and the Rocky Mountain School, which set out to artistically capture the new American landscape. The style in which Bierstadt painted landscapes is referred to as Luminism in the art world. Luminist-type of landscapes are characterized by hazy, cloudy skies and calm, reflective waters, while emphasizing details and light. One of Bierstadt’s famous Luminist paintings is called “Valley of the Yosemite.”
