Alexandre Cabanel was a French painter from Montpellier and was noted as being Napoleon III’s favorite painter. His paintings belong to the artistic movement of Academic art. A well-known portrait painter, Cabanel also showcased his artistic skills in his portrayals of allegorical, historical, and religious scenes. Perhaps his most significant oil on canvas paintings are "Fallen Angel", "Birth of Venus" and "Death of Moses.” Cabanel made his greatest artistic contribution in professorship and was appointed professor emeritus at the École des Beaux-Arts in Paris.
