Alfred Sisley

ALFRED SISLEY

Alfred Sisley was a French-British painter from Paris. As one of the founding members of the French Impressionism movement, Sisley created amazing landscapes “en plein air,” meaning “outside,” to fully capture the direct but transient effect of sunlight in his art. As an Impressionist, he mastered the use of softer, pale colors to achieve the calm effect of the natural environment. Sisley went on to create many “en plein air” works, including paintings of the River Thames and the River Seine, their bridges, and the suburbs of Paris. Although he was a very successful and somewhat wealthy artist for the majority of his life, he would live out the rest of his days in poverty after failing to maintain his artistic reputation.
