Andre Derain

ANDRE DERAIN

Andre Derain was a French painter from Chatou, just outside of Paris. His early paintings possess qualities of the Impressionist movement; however, Derain was one of the founders of the Fauvism: an art movement that showcased strong, bold colors and leaned away from the more rigid and realistic style of Impressionism. His colleague, Heni Matisse, was also a co-founder of Fauvism. Derain’s most important landscape paintings were created during his stay in Collioure, a small village in the south of France. “Mountains at Collioure” and “Boats in the Harbour” feature striking, vibrant colors, rough brush strokes, and an avant-garde approach to capturing a natural environment: true Fauvism.
