Antonio Jacobsen - Canvas Prints

Antonio Jacobsen - Canvas Prints

Antonio Nicolo Gasparo Jacobsen was a Danish-American martine artist. He is called the “Audubon of Steam Vessels.” Born in Denmark, Jacobsen attended the Royal Academy of Design before moving to the United States. He settled near a port, which gave him daily exposure to American ships. He started painting them and in no time at all, his reputation grew. He started getting commissions for ship portraits from ship owners. Many of his works sold for five dollars (it was a lot back then) but still a lot less than other artists, which is why he would get so many customers. He painted more than 6,000 vessels in his lifetime. On February 19, 2006, Fetching the Mark, an original Jacobsen piece, was auctioned for $281,000, which was more than triple the price previously paid for a Jacobsen piece.
