Archibald Thorburn

ARCHIBALD THORBURN

Archibald Thorburn was a Scottish painter from Lasswade. His paintings belong to the Realism movement. Thorburn dedicated his life to wildlife painting, and mostly painted birds and other animals in their natural environments. He often found inspiration in Gaick Forest near Kingussie in Scotland. Interestingly, Thorburn refused to use electric light while painting because he preferred natural light, so he would paint by lamps or candles when indoors. He was also interested in illustration and designed numerous sports and nature books, including Familiar Wild Birds and Coloured Figures of the Birds of the British Isles.
