Artemisia Gentileschi

ARTEMISIA GENTILESCHI

Artemisia Gentileschi, also known as Artemisia Lomi, was an Italian Baroque painter. Her work was known to be influenced by the Caravaggio style, meaning there was a dramatic use of light and shadow in her paintings. Gentileschi’s work showcased mythological women, allegories, victims of violence, and warriors of the time. Some of her most prominent works include “Susanna and the Elders,” “Judith and Her Maidservant,” and perhaps the most gruesome, “Judith Slaying Holofernes,” which is said to have a connection with Gentileschi and her own trauma and struggles as a teenager. Gentileschi was the first woman to become a member of the Accademia di Arte del Disegno in Florence. This would change the perception and status of women as artists in society.
