Arthur Bowen Davies was one of the most respected and financially successful American painters from Utica, New York. He was an avant-gardist and a part of the Ashcan school, an artistic movement that depicted daily city life in New York. Davies’ work was greatly influenced by American landscape art, especially the works of George Inness. In addition to landscapes, his paintings most often depict ethereal figures, such as in “The Dawning” and “Romance.”
