Bernardino Luini

BERNARDINO LUINI

Bernardino Luini was an Italian painter during the High Renaissance and was said to have trained directly with Leonardo da Vinci. Many of his early works are attributed to da Vinci, however, Luini was known for his stylized portrayal of women in his paintings: giving female figures elongated eyes, a style which later scholars call “Luinesque.” Luini’s most famous works depict religious and sometimes mythological scenes. His most famous works are entitled “Madonna and Child Enthroned with Angels,” “Saint Catherine,” and “Madonna of the Rose Garden.” It is important to note that while Luini did study under Leonardo da Vinci, he was also highly influenced by the works of Raphael in Rome.
