Canaletto Canaletto - Canvas Prints

Canaletto - Canvas Prints

Giovanni Antonio Canal, better known as Canaletto, was an Italian painter of cityscapes. He chose his name to set himself apart from his family, a few of which were also painters. Canaletto made countless paintings of Venice, Rome, and London. He was also an experienced printmaker, mainly utilizing the etching technique. His rise to fame can be attributed to King George III, who bought a large collection of Canaletto’s works for a hefty sum. Canaletto’s father was also an artist who painted backdrops for theatrical productions. Canaletto would become his own artist, living on commission from his excellent landscapes and cityscapes. Canaletto branched out to paint people and places, and by the end of his life, his work suffered as it did not have the same flair as his earlier pieces. Some would say he had hired other artists to create his works. Although Canaletto rejected these claims, his reputation suffered until his death.
