Currier And Ives - Canvas Prints

CURRIER AND IVES - Canvas Prints

Currier and Ives was a prominent American Printmaking company based in New York City. Formed in 1835, lithographers Nathaniel Currier and James Merritt Ives partnered together to produce fine art prints as black and white lithographs that were then colored by hand and sold to the public. The company would usually see their biggest demand for these colored lithographs after a tragic social event, such as “Awful Conflagration of the Steamboat Lexington in Long Island Sound, January 13, 1840,” or “Life of a Fireman,” which displays firemen battling a raging fire in a city building. However, not all lithographs contained such dreadful scenes. Artists at Currier and Ives would also produce works intended for home decoration, including scenes of peaceful countryside, wildlife, or flowers.
