Dante Gabriel Rossetti

DANTE GABRIEL ROSSETTI

Dante Gabriel Rossetti was an English painter, illustrator, and poet. He was born in London, into a noble Italian family, amongst many other creative family members. Rossetti was a part of the Romanticism movement, but his works in art and poetry also profoundly influenced the Aestheticism movement of the late 19th century. Alongside six other acclaimed artists of the time, Rossetti co-founded the Pre-Raphaelite Brotherhood: a group that embraced immense detail, bold coloring, a rejection of Raphael’s artistic standards, and an overall a return to the Quattrocento ideals of art. Rossetti’s paintings often depict religious scenes, love, and death. He favored using women as his muses for such paintings, often creating a dark and sometimes sensual feel in the final painting. His most important works are entitled “The Girlhood of Mary Virgin,” “Beata Beatrix,” and “Bocca Baciata.”
