Diego Velazquez - Canvas Prints

DIEGO VELAZQUEZ - Canvas Prints

Diego Velazquez was a Spanish painter from Seville, and he was one of the leading artists of the Spanish Golden Age. When he began painting, he was recognized for his use of dramatic lighting and contrast, similar to Caravaggio’s “chiaroscuro,” but later moved towards a more traditional Baroque painting style. In his early years, Velazquez focused on portraiture, notably painting members of the Spanish royal family. His first masterpiece during this time was called “Las Meninas,” a highly complex piece of art that offered a new perspective. It captured unique, unseen moments in an otherwise standard portrait session. “Las Meninas” blurred the boundaries between the subject and viewer, breaking new ground for Velazquez and other artists of the Golden Age. Later in his career, Velazquez would create bodegón scenes, or still life paintings that feature pantry or food items. An example of this would be his piece entitled “Old Woman Frying Eggs,” which depicts an older woman frying eggs for a young boy in a kitchen environment. When Velazquez died in 1660, it was said that “the glory of painting in Spain died with him.”
