Dominique Papety - Canvas Prints

DOMINIQUE PAPETY - Canvas Prints

Dominique Papety was a French painter from Marseille. Papety was best known for his Neo-Grec and Neoclassical style, a revivalist moment that celebrated Greek themes and imagery. He was a masterful painter at an early age, having enrolled in the École des Beaux-arts in 1835 to study with renowned teacher, Léon Cogniet. Papety would travel to Mount Athos in Greece several times, sketching and creating paintings of religious scenes and capturing the details of all 23 monasteries he visited in the area. Later, Papety’s sketches of his time in Greece would be displayed in the Panthéon in Paris. His most notable painting was entitled “The Dream of Happiness,” which was inspired by his travel throughout Greece. Sadly, Papety died in 1849 at the age of 34, during the second cholera pandemic. Papety is fondly remembered for his profound contribution to the arts.
