Edward Armitage - Canvas Prints

EDWARD ARMITAGE - Canvas Prints

Edward Armitage was an English painter during the Victorian-era in London. In 1837 he enrolled in the famed École des Beaux-Arts in Paris and studied under historical painter, Paul Delaroche. Influenced by his teacher, Armitage’s later paintings and works would take on a more historical and political view. He created “The Battle of Meanee” on oil and canvas in 1847, which was eventually purchased by Queen Victoria. His painting entitled “Retribution” was an allusion to the Indian Rebellion of 1857, showing the warrior, Britannia, about to slay a tiger: thus, ending the conflict and death in the surrounding scenes of the painting. Some more notable pieces from Armitage include “Caesar’s First Invasion of Britain,” “The Siren,” and “Julian the Apostate.”
