Edward Lear

EDWARD LEAR

Edward Lear was a British painter from Holloway, London. He was proficient in both Romanticism and Naturalism style, as well as illustration, poetry, and prose. Lear was also skilled in composing music, often creating music to accompany the poetry of Lord Alfred Tennyson, an idol of his in the community. He is credited with popularizing limerick poetry in the late 19th century. But he is perhaps best remembered for his detailed illustrations of animals and birds, and his travelogue-like landscapes. His bird illustrations were so authentic and striking that he would go on to become an ornithological draughtsman, adding to his long list of artistic accomplishments. His most famous illustrations include “The Family of Psittacidae (Parrots),” Psitteuteles Versicolor,” and “Four Winged Birds.”
