Edwin Henry Landseer - Canvas Prints

Edwin Henry Landseer - Canvas Prints

Sir Edwin Henry Landseer was an English painter and sculpture, known best for his animal paintings. He primarily depicted horses, dogs, and stags. A prominent artist of the 19th century, Landseer’s original works can be found in several museums and exhibitions, like Tate Britain, Kenwood House, and the Wallace Collection. Born in London to an engraver, Landseer developed early artistic talent. He studied under several artists – his father included – and a history painter who encouraged Landseer to master animal dissections to fully understand their forms. A 13, he exhibited his works at the Royal Academy. He would also become an Associate and later an Academician. The grunt of his fame and income came by the reproduction and distribution of his works, which was done so via engravings. His works were common in middle-class homes, but he was also popular with aristocracy. By his 30s, Landseer suffered a breakdown and would be plagued with depression and alcoholism for the rest of his life.
