ERNST HAECKEL
Ernst Heinrich Philipp August Haeckel was born in Germany in 1834. He held many titles, including zoologist, marine biologist, and artist. He discovered and named thousands of new species during his career and was made famous in the art world for his full-color illustrations of these new species. He published a book entitled Art Forms of Nature, which he illustrated completely. The book contains over 100 color illustrations of wildlife from land and from the ocean. Haeckel’s use of rich, vivid colors and acute details was not only innovative to science at the time but forged a path for the Art Nouveau movement of the early 20th century.
