Felix Vallotton

FELIX VALLOTTON

Felix Vallotton was a Swiss-French artist from Lausanne, Switzerland. He was an Impressionist painter and a part of the Art Nouveau movement. Early in his career, Vallotton mainly painted portraits, but he was inspired by the Japonism movement and artists like Hokusai. This inspiration would lead him to begin creating and perfecting woodcuts: an artistic process to which he is credited with developing to this day. Vallotton was a part of “Les Nabis,” a small group of artists that embraced a more Modernist approach to art at the time. After his time with the group, Vallotton would continue painting. His subject matter would range from interior scenes to landscapes and cityscapes, and nude female figures. Some prominent works include “La Chambre Rouge,” “Moonlight,” “The Lie,” and “Perseus Killing the Dragon [Except That It’s a Gator!]”
