Frederic Bazille

FREDERIC BAZILLE

Frederic Bazille was a French artist from Montpellier. He was an Impressionist painter who often created his works “en plein air,” and enjoyed painting figures in outdoor settings. His use of color helped to enhance these outdoor scenes. One of his most famous works, “The Pink Dress,” features a woman wearing a pink dress that is almost illuminated against a muted city landscape. Another key example of Bazille’s outdoor figure painting is a piece called “Family Reunion,” where all figures are painted on a terrace gathered in shade. Bazille was respected amongst his artist peers, such as Claude Monet and Alfred Sisley, and was truly an up-and-coming force within the Impressionist movement. However, Bazille was sadly killed in battle during the Franco-Prussian War in 1870. He was just 28 years old.
