GEORGE STUBBS - Canvas Prints

English painter George Stubbs was an astounding animal painter and talented anatomical draftsman. He mostly painted horses. Whistlejacket, one of his paintings depicting a prancing horse, stands as his most famous piece. Although horses remained his favorite, He painted other animals, like lions, tiger, and monkeys. In fact, two of his paintings that featured a kangaroo and a dingo, respectively, were the first depictions of these animals in Western Art! As well known as some of his horses are today, Stubbs was not always prominent. Historians also know very little about his personal life – most of the public details about his life come from a conversation Stubbs had with a friend before his death. Stubbs was the son of a prosperous tanner. He was an artist’s apprentice but was largely self-taught. His early interests in anatomy and horses helped found his artistic career. Stubbs was a popular artist in his lifetime who completed countless commissions of paintings featuring hunters and racehorses.
