GEORGES DE LA TOUR
Georges de La Tour was a French Baroque painter from the village of Vic-sur-Seille. Most of his paintings depict religious scenes and feature heavy contrasts between light and dark: a lighting method called “chiaroscuro.” This method in painting was famously used by Italian Baroque painter, Caravaggio, and La Tours was immensely influenced by his works. La Tour’s subjects are often lit only by candlelight which gives his paintings a quiet, yet eerie quality. “Job Mocked by his Wife,” “Nativity,” and “The Dream of St. Joseph” are all dramatic examples of La Tour’s religious imagery. While other paintings, such as “Portrait of an Old Man,” showcase La Tour’s more relatable subject matter.
