GUSTAVE COURBET - Canvas Prints
Jean Désiré Gustave Courbet was a French painter from Ornans. He was a leader in the Realism movement of the 19th century, creating non-idealized, and often socially charged works. He believed that an artist should paint “only what they can see.” This philosophy defied traditional Romanticism standards and inspired artists well into the Impressionism movement. Courbet painted in many styles. He was known for his portrait work, nude paintings, and his land and seascapes. His self-portrait entitled “Desperate Man” is perhaps his most recognized work.
