Gustave Moreau

GUSTAVE MOREAU

Gustave Moreau was a French Symbolist artist born in Paris. He was a prominent figure of the Symbolism movement, creating over 15,000 paintings during his lifetime. Moreau’s paintings consisted of mainly biblical and historical themes, many of which also carried a subtle warning of death. The watercolor “L'Apparition” is perhaps the clearest example of this, as it features Salome dancing for Herod Antipas with a vision of St. John the Baptist’s severed head. However, not all of Moreau’s works are as grim. “Oedipus and the Sphinx” and “Deianira” showcase Moreau’s brilliant use of lighting and imagination.
