HONORE DAUMIER - Canvas Prints

Honore Daumier was a French Realist artist from Marseille. He was known for his paintings, printmaking, and sculptures. Daumier was also skilled in caricature illustrations. He was inspired by politics and social issues and his works often depicted his controversial opinions on these matters. Daumier created “Gargantua,” a lithograph that portrayed King Louis Philippe in an extremely unfavorable manner. He was sentenced to six months in jail for inciting hatred of the King but never served any time behind bars. Daumier would continue to create politically charged works, like “The Court of King Pétaud” and “The Republic,” before focusing on sculpture and printmaking towards this end of his career.
