Horace Vernet

HORACE VERNET

Horace Vernet was a French painter from Paris. His works belong to the Orientalist movement. Vernet was inspired by non-idealized subjects from contemporary life. He rejected the Classicism standards of the French Revolution and wanted to portray scenes of war as authentically as possible. “The Battle of Valmy,” “The Taking of the Malakoff Redoubt,” and “Street Fighting on Rue Soufflot” are all examples of Vernet’s heroic depiction of combat in France. In his later years, Vernet dabbled in photography. It is said that Vernet took one of the earliest known photos of the island at Fort Manoel.
