J.F. Herring Senior - Canvas Prints

John Frederick Herring Sr. was an English painter, sign maker, and coachman. He was one of the most highly successful artists of the mid-nineteenth century in Europe. One of his most noteworthy paintings is Pharaoh’s Chariot Horses. Herring was born overseas. The first 18 years of his life were spent in London, where he accrued a massive interest in drawing horses. Herring married Ann Harris and had two sons, both of whom became artists, and two daughters, who funnily enough married artists. Herring earned a large sum of his living by painting inn signs and coach insignias, using his spare time to paint. He eventually attracted wealthy commissioners, who requested dozens of pieces from him. Harring’s fame allowed him to become the appointed Animal Painter to the Duchess of Kent. He eventually stopped painting horses for an unknown reason, switching to agricultural and narrative scenes.
