James Abbott McNeill Whistler was an American painter from Lowell, Massachusetts. His works show characteristics from both the Realism and Impressionism movements, yet Whistler was the founder of the Tonalism movement in America. Tonalism describes an artistic style of painting landscapes with an overall color or atmospheric tone. In addition, Whistler was known for his portrait work. The most famous of which is the painting entitled “Arrangement in Grey and Black No.1,” commonly referred to as “Whistler’s Mother.” During his career, Whistler also created lithographs, etchings, and interior designs.
