Jan van Eyck

JAN VAN EYCK

Jan van Eyck was a Flemish painter from Limburg. He was a central figure during the Early Northern Renaissance and contributed to the beginnings of Early Netherlandish painting. Van Eyck’s style featured heavy iconography, inscriptions, and even framing. Through portraiture, he was able to experiment with linear perspective, naturalism, and realism standards of the times. Van Eyck was an extremely accomplished and sought-after portrait artist. Perhaps his most famous work is “The Arnolfini Portrait,” a complex painting filled with Van Eyck’s signature icons. This painting not only depicts an intimate wedding ceremony between Arnolfini and his bride, but also serves as the “marriage certificate” due to Van Eyck signing the painting as a witness to the event.
