Jean-Honore Fragonard

JEAN-HONORE FRAGONARD

Jean-Honore Fragonard was a French artist from Grasse. His paintings belong to the Rococo movement, and he was also a skilled printmaker and etcher. He was known for his portraiture of beautiful women and his paintings show an influence of romantic motifs, such as gardens, terraces, and fountains. Among his most prominent paintings are “Young Girl Reading,” “The Swing,” and “Musical Contest,” each inspired by a dream-like female figure. Unfortunately, the high-society patrons Fragonard liked to portray were often exiled during the French Revolution, so his popularity waned during this period.
