Jean-Leon Gerome was a French Academic painter from Vesoul. He was an extremely well-known artist, and his works were widely reproduced. He found inspiration in Greek mythology, Orientalism, history, and portraiture. Gerome was also noted for his accurate depictions of the nude form. His most important works are “Cock Fight,” “The Slave Market,” and “Phryne Before the Areopagus.” Later in his career, Gerome became a skilled sculptor. His marble Tanagra figurines created for the Paris Salon received positive recognition.
