MARIA SIBYLLA MERIAN
Maria Sibylla Merian was a German artist from Frankfurt. She was a naturalist, a Baroque-style painter, and scientific illustrator. Merian was interested in illustrating wildlife, specifically botanical themes, metamorphosis, and insects. She was one of the first female naturalists to study and observe plants and insects directly and even raised silkworms. Frequent travels enabled her to explore different types of insects and Merian became skilled enough to present their life cycles both pictorially and descriptively. In addition to painting, Merian made great contributions to naturalists and entomologists of the time.
