Mary Cassatt

MARY CASSATT

Mary Cassatt was an American painter from Pittsburgh, Pennsylvania. Her works belong to the Impressionism movement. Cassatt was one of the most important figures in genre-painting during the 19th century. She portrayed the everyday lives of women: their societal roles, their roles in family life, and she was especially inspired by the relationship between mother and child. “Child’s Bath,” “Maternity,” and “Young Mother Sewing” are just some of Cassatt’s works that highlight these themes. Cassatt was a longtime friend of Edgar Degas, the notable French Impressionist painter, and the two artists often collaborated while Cassatt was living in Paris.
