Maurice Prendergast was an American artist born in Newfoundland. He was a Post-Impressionist painter who worked with oils, watercolors, and monotype printing. Prendergast was known as landscape painter and created both natural and urban landscape works. He was associated with The Eight, also called the Ashcan School, which was an artist collective that specialized in depicting New York City street scenes. “Charles Street, Boston,” “Picnic by the Bay,” and “New Tide, Beachmont” are all examples of standout works by Prendergast.
