Melchior d'Hondecoeter - Canvas Prints

Melchior d’Hondecoeter was a Dutch poultry painter who exclusively depicted exotic birds in park-like landscapes. It was almost a family business: his parents both had interests in animal painting. Hondecoeter studied under his father, and then his uncle, both of whom inspired him to develop his own technique and connection to color. Hondecoeter’s depictions of birds were amazingly realistic. He featured geese, partridges, pigeons, ducks, peacocks, and more! One of his more prominent works is Hunting Trophies at a Magpie on a Tree Stump, which is currently in display in an Amsterdam museum. As Hondecoeter entered adulthood, he joined a local painter’s academy, found a nice girl to marry, had two children, and spent much of his time (when he was not painting) in the garden or at a tavern. After he and his wife died, his daughter was left with massive debts, which suggests he either didn’t make much income from his works or he managed his earnings poorly.
