Ohara Koson - Canvas Prints

Ohara Koson - Canvas Prints

Ohara Koson, a Japanese painter and print designer, was a prominent 19th century shin-hanga, or “new prints” artist. One of his best received works is Wagtail and Lotus, which is currently displayed at the Brooklyn Museum. Most of his artistic training came from Ishikawa Prefecture Technical School and painting under a more experienced artist, Suzuki Kazon. He produced several ukiyo-e prints of the Russo-Japanese War, but he preferred more decorative subjects like birds and flowers. He worked with several publishers, all of whom helped him distribute his works. Most of his renown came from the United States where his work was received particularly well. He spent his entire life actively designing prints.
