PAUL GAUGUIN

French post-Impressionist painter and sculptor Paul Gauguin became an important figure in Symbolist and Synthetist art, best recognized for his experimental use of bold colors, exaggerated body proportions, and stark contrasts. He was a key artist in paving the way for Primitivist art and was very influential to the French avant-garde. Entering adulthood, he got his first job as a stockbroker and remained successful and wealthy for 11 years. When the stock market crashed, he decided to pursue art full-time, receiving help from artist friends he had acquired over the years. He travelled frequently to foreign countries, which deeply impacted his works. He was mostly unappreciated and unknown in his lifetime, gaining recognition and glory after his death.
