
PIERRE-JOSEPH REDOUTE
Pierre-Joseph Redoute was a Belgian painter and botanist from Saint-Hubert. He was skilled in botanical illustration and is best known for his watercolors of flowers. Redoute painted roses and lilies from the Château de Malmaison near Paris. Because of his knowledge of botany, he was able to paint with meticulous detail and precision. Redoute was often called the “Raphael of flowers,” and is considered the best botanical illustrator of all time. “Rosa centifolia,” “Fritillaria imperialis,” and “Bouquet of Roses with an Anenome” are some of Redoute's standout paintings.
