William Merritt Chase was an American artist from Nineveh, Indiana. He was an acclaimed Impressionist painter and founder of the Chase School, known today as Parsons School of Design. Chase found inspiration in still life painting, landscapes, urban scenes, and portraiture. He was known to use heavy contrasts and color saturation in his works, with a strong concentration of light and shadow. His paintings “View of the Navy Arsenal,” “Mrs. Chase in Prospect Park,” and “At the Seaside” are just some of his prominent pieces.
