Juan Gris

JUAN GRIS

Juan Gris was a Spanish artist from Madrid. He was an innovative and instrumental part of the Cubism movement of the early 20th century. Gris began his artistic career making illustrations for local magazines on political and satirical topics. His early works were noted for his creative ability to blur the boundaries between object and background. Gris painted workspaces, musical instruments, and various interior still life scenes, and eventually went on to paint Cubist-style portraits. "Guitar and Pipe,” "Portrait of Josette Gris," and "Still Life with Guitar" are just some of his famous artworks. Gris’s painting entitled "Portrait of Pablo Picasso" is considered the most successful Cubist portrait in the history of art.
