Gustave Dore was a French printer, illustrator, and painter from Strasbourg. He is best known for his wood-engravings, a type of printing technique based on illustration. Dore created thousands of wood-engravings during his career and almost all of them were used to illustrate classic literature. Dore also created a series of engravings to depict stories from the Bible. “Jacob Wrestling with the Angel” and “Rime of the Ancient Mariner” are some of Dore’s most technical and important wood-engravings.
