Italian painter Sandro Botticelli painted the immortal The Birth of Venus and iconic Primavera, both of which exemplify the High Renaissance for any viewer. Botticelli was born in Florence and would remain in the same neighborhood for all his life. The neighborhood was inhabited by common workers, like his father, a goldsmith. After completing primary school, Botticelli apprenticed under his father learning the family craft. When Botticelli realized he wanted to pursue art, he abandoned his father’s trade and apprenticed under a local painter, who trained him in Florentine style and techniques. Botticelli also learned panel painting, fresco, and drawing. By his forties, Botticelli was an accomplished, successful painting master who easily created harmonious compositions featuring realistic, romantic human forms. Botticelli lived with his family his whole life, never marrying, absorbed fully into his art.
