Theodore Gericault

THEODORE GERICAULT

Theodore Gericault was a French artist from Rouen. He was a painter, lithographer, and one of the key leaders of the Romanticism period. Gericault was known for his intense, somber depictions of historical events and disaster scenes. He is perhaps most famous for his painting entitled “The Raft of the Medusa,” which depicts the shipwrecked crew of the Méduse, struggling to survive in the rough seas after being abandoned by their captain. Gericault's paintings tackled themes of grief, horror, pain, and complexity. He is remembered for his dramatic and haunting depictions of reality.
