
THOMAS EAKINS
Thomas Eakins was an American artist from Philadelphia, Pennsylvania. He was a Realist painter, photographer, and considered one of the most significant artists from the United States. Eakins was inspired by ordinary daily activities and used his friends and relatives to pose for his artworks. Fishing, hunting, and rowing were also common activities painted and photographed by Eakins. His oil on canvas painting entitled “Gross Clinic” is perhaps his best-known work. In this painting, Eakins depicts Dr. Samuel Gross conducting a lesson and surgical demonstration. Eakins can be seen in the painting to the right of Dr. Gross.
